This allows the tool to flip your shapes to fit more pieces into a single row, potentially saving you up to 20% on your total fabric purchase.
Shape-Specific Logic: For circles and rectangles, the tool calculates a traditional bounding box. For tessellating shapes like hexagons, it uses a staggered alignment model to minimize the "negative space" between cuts.
Accounting for Shrinkage and Seam Margins

How much fabric do I need for 100 2-inch hexagons? Using our calculator you can simply input 2 inches for the side length and "100" for quantity. Because hexagons nest beautifully the tool will show you a significantly lower yardage requirement than if you were cutting 100 2-inch squares.
What is the best bolt width to use? Standard quilting cotton is typically 44" wide, but the usable width (after removing the selvages) is usually 42". We recommend using the 42" setting for the most accurate and "safe" calculation.
Does this calculate the background fabric too? This tool is specifically designed for the appliqué pieces themselves. To calculate background yardage you can treat your background as a single large Rectangle shape with the dimensions of your quilt top.
