Take the Guesswork Out of Finding Your Fit with Our BJJ Gi Size Calculator

If you have ever shopped for a new kimono for grappling you know the frustration of staring at a standard sizing chart and wondering how it will actually fit after a few weeks of training.

Buying a gi is an investment and getting the wrong size can lead to a miserable experience on the mats.

You might find yourself swimming in excess fabric that gives your training partners easy grips or you might end up with high-water pants and restricted shoulder mobility that limits your own movement.

The most common question beginners and veterans alike ask is, what size bjj gi should i get? Unfortunately, looking at a basic height and weight chart rarely tells the whole story.

That is exactly why we built this comprehensive bjj gi size calculator. Instead of just giving you a generic size recommendation based on your current dimensions our tool factors in the crucial element that most charts ignore: what happens to the fabric after you wash and dry it.

What is the BJJ Gi Size and Shrinkage Calculator?

Our gi size calculator is a purpose-built tool designed to give you the most accurate sizing recommendation possible.

While most sizing charts simply map your height and weight to a static A-size or F-size our system goes several steps further.

It calculates your ideal baseline size and then predicts exactly how much that specific gi will shrink based on the fabric weave, whether it was pre-shrunk at the factory, and how you personally plan to wash and dry it.

This tool does not just output a generic size. It provides your recommended size, estimates the exact shrinkage rate as a percentage and calculates the expected length you will lose on both the sleeves and the pants.

If the calculator detects that your planned wash routine will shrink the gi so much that it no longer fits your body, it will actively warn you to size up.

This eliminates the expensive trial and error of buying a gi, washing it and finding out it no longer fits.

H2: How to Use the Gi Size Calculator Step by Step

Using the tool is straightforward, but taking a moment to understand each input will ensure you get the best possible results. Here is exactly how to generate your customized sizing and shrinkage profile.

Step 1

Choose Your Sizing Category and Units Start by selecting whether you prefer to input your measurements in Imperial (feet, inches,\ and pounds) or Metric (centimeters and kilograms). Next, choose your sizing category.

The tool supports standard Adult Male and Unisex sizing commonly known as A-sizes, as well as Adult Female sizing, often labeled as F-sizes or W-sizes depending on the manufacturer.

Step 2

Enter Your Height and Weight Input your current, accurate height and weight. Be honest here. The calculator uses these exact numbers to place you within the standard industry brackets.

If you fall outside of the standard height-to-weight ratios, the tool is smart enough to detect whether you are taller than average or wider than average for your bracket and will recommend L (Long) or H (Husky) sizing variants accordingly.

Step 3:

Input Gi Material and Shrinkage Factors This is where our tool outpaces a standard bjj gi size chart. Select the weave of the gi you are planning to buy.

Pearl weave is the modern industry standard and shrinks moderately. Gold weave is thicker and notoriously prone to heavy shrinking.

Double weave is incredibly heavy and also shrinks significantly, while ripstop or hemp blends experience minimal shrinkage. You must also select whether the manufacturer lists the gi as pre-shrunk, as this drastically alters the final fabric behavior.

Step 4

Select Your Wash Routine Your laundry habits dictate the final fit of your gi. Select your intended wash and dry routine from the dropdown.

If you wash in cold water and hang dry you will experience minimal shrinkage. If you wash in warm water and tumble dry on low heat, expect moderate shrinkage.

If you plan to wash in hot water and blast it in the dryer on high heat you will trigger maximum shrinkage.

Why You Need More Than Just a Basic BJJ Gi Size Chart

The fundamental problem with traditional brazilian jiu jitsu gi sizes is that cotton is a dynamic material.

A brand new, unwashed gi straight out of the plastic bag is almost always going to fit much larger than it is intended to.

Manufacturers purposefully cut their garments larger than the advertised size because they know the cotton will inevitably contract.

If you just look at a static chart you are only looking at the unwashed dimensions. Our tool bridges the gap between the factory dimensions and the real-world dimensions after months of heavy training and washing.

If you are hovering near the upper limits of an A2, and you buy an A2 made of raw gold weave that you plan to wash on hot, our calculator will warn you that you are about to ruin your gi and advise you to size up to an A3.

How Should a BJJ Gi Fit?

Understanding how a gi should fit is vital for both comfort and performance. When evaluating your fit, there are a few key areas to check. First, the sleeves should reach the wrist bone when your arms are extended straight forward.

If they ride up to your forearms, they are too short and may fail competition inspections. If they swallow your hands, they are too long and will give your opponents an overwhelming grip advantage.

The pants should sit comfortably at your waist and the hem should end just slightly above your ankle bone. You should be able to perform a full squat without the pants restricting your knees or hips.

The jacket lapels should cross over your chest comfortably allowing for full shoulder mobility without excessive bagging around the midsection.

Finding the perfect fit is a delicate balance of buying the right initial size and managing the shrinking process carefully.

The Truth About BJJ Gi Shrinking

Bjj gi shrinking is a scientific reality of cotton fabrics. The threads are stretched under high tension during the weaving and manufacturing process.

When those threads are exposed to water, agitation and especially heat they relax and contract back to their natural state.

Even garments labeled as pre-shrunk will still shrink slightly over their lifespan. Pre-shrunk simply means the fabric was washed and dried before being cut and sewn, removing the majority of the extreme initial shrinkage.

However, the seams and the lapel core will still tighten up over time.

If you buy a gi that is not pre-shrunk, you must be incredibly careful. Raw cotton kimonos can shrink a full size or more if subjected to a hot wash and a hot dryer cycle. Our calculator accounts for these exact material behaviors so you do not have to guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi sizes fit the same?

No, while the A0 through A5 system is standard the exact measurements can vary slightly by manufacturer.

However our calculator uses the widely accepted industry standard averages for these brackets.

By factoring in height, weight and your specific body type (directing you to Long or Husky sizes if needed) we provide a highly accurate baseline that applies to the vast majority of mainstream brands.

Should I buy a size up and shrink it down?

This is a very common tactic but it is only necessary if you fall at the absolute top end of a sizing bracket.

If you are squarely in the middle of an A2 bracket, buying an A3 and trying to shrink it will likely leave you with a gi that is still too baggy.

However, if our calculator detects that your measurements put you at the upper threshold of a size and your wash routine causes high shrinkage, it will explicitly instruct you to buy a size up and shrink it to fit.

What happens if I fall between two sizes?

If you are taller than you are wide for a specific bracket the calculator will note this and suggest looking for an L (Long) size, such as an A2L. If you are heavier than average for your height it will suggest an H (Husky) or S (Short) variant.

If your chosen brand does not offer these specific variants the general rule is to buy the larger size to accommodate your largest measurement and then use targeted hot washing to carefully shrink the excess length or width.

Conclusion: Roll in Comfort and Confidence

There is no reason to stress over sizing charts or waste money on gear that will not fit you in a month.
