The Molecular Contraction Anomaly

You might notice that traditional math doesn't always align perfectly with real world chemistry. If you mix 1 liter of pure ethanol with 1 liter of pure water you do not get 2 liters of liquid. You get approximately 1.92 liters.

This happens because of molecular contraction. Water molecules are small and can pack tightly into the empty spaces between the larger ethanol molecules.

What is the formula for dilution of alcohol?

The standard mathematical formula used to determine how much water to add to a spirit is to take your initial volume and multiply it by your initial ABV divided by your target ABV, minus one. In practical terms: Water to Add = Initial Volume x ((Initial ABV / Target ABV) - 1). Our calculator processes this automatically in real-time.

How do you calculate the proof of alcohol?

Alcohol content is generally measured as a percentage of Alcohol By Volume (ABV). In the United States, proof is calculated simply as twice the ABV percentage. 

This means a spirit that is accurately measured at 50% alcohol by volume is exactly 100 proof. If a spirit is 40% ABV it is 80 proof.

How much water to dilute 100 proof to 80 proof?

To figure this out we first convert proof to ABV. 100 proof is 50% ABV and 80 proof is 40% ABV. If you are starting with exactly 1000 ml of 100 proof spirit you divide the starting ABV (50) by the target ABV (40) which equals 1.25. Subtract 1 to get 0.25. 

Finally multiply your starting volume (1000 ml) by 0.25. You will need to add exactly 250 ml of water to reduce your 1000 ml of 100 proof spirit down to 80 proof.

How much water to add to 90% alcohol to make it 40%?

Let’s assume you are starting with 1000 ml (1 Liter) of 90% alcohol. Divide your starting ABV (90) by your target ABV (40) which gives you 2.25. Subtract 1 to get 1.25. Multiply your starting volume (1000 ml) by 1.25. 

You will need to add exactly 1250 ml of water to bring your 90% alcohol down to a perfectly drinkable 40% ABV.
