The Ideal Fragrance Load for Soy Wax

Soy wax is incredibly popular for e-commerce candle businesses because it burns clean and is eco-friendly. However, it is notoriously picky about fragrance oils.

While paraffin wax can sometimes hold up to 12% fragrance oil, most natural soy waxes (like Golden Brands 464, 444 or NatureWax C-3) have a maximum fragrance load of 9% to 10%.

For the best results, a 6% to 8% fragrance load is the sweet spot for soy candles. This provides a strong, room-filling hot throw without overwhelming the wick. 

Remember, adding more fragrance oil does not automatically equal a stronger smelling candle. If you exceed the wax's maximum capacity, the wick will clog, the flame will drown, and the candle won't throw any scent at all.

How much fragrance oil per pound of soy wax? 

At an 8% fragrance load, you will need approximately 1.28 ounces of fragrance oil for every 1 pound (16 oz) of soy wax. If you use a 10% load, you will need 1.6 ounces of oil per pound of wax. You can easily plug these numbers into our calculator using the "Wax On Hand" setting to verify!

What happens if I put too much fragrance oil in my soy candle? 

Overloading your soy wax causes the oil to seep out, a process known as "sweating." The candle will look wet or oily on top. Furthermore, too much oil can clog the capillary action of your cotton or wood wick, causing the candle to tunnel, burn weakly, or extinguish itself.

Does fragrance load include liquid candle dye? 

Technically, yes. Any liquid additive contributes to the total load your wax can hold. However, because liquid candle dye is usually added in microscopic amounts (a few drops per pound), most candle makers do not subtract it from their fragrance oil calculations. If you are using heavy amounts of liquid dye, consider dropping your fragrance load by 0.5% to ensure the wax doesn't separate.
